Motor boats
Motor boat or motor yacht
Motor boats / powerboats (terms used interchangeably) are boats that are powered by either an internal combustion engine or an electric motor and are commonly used for recreational purposes. Motor boats are sometimes confused with yachts, as both are motorised watercraft, but yachts tend to be much larger and more luxurious than motor boats. Motor boats typically measure up to 10-12 metres in length and could have no cabin or just a single cabin, may have a small cockpit. Larger motorboats and vessels, which are often equipped with cabins, wet rooms, kitchens, sun decks and other features, are referred to as motor yachts. In many countries, driving a powerboat for recreational purposes usually requires a license.
Yacht or Boat?
When talking about motor-driven watercraft, the terms yacht and boat are often used interchangeably. Generally, motor boats are recreational vessels up to 10-12 meters in length with no cabins or at most a small shelter. For vessels that are larger and contain cabins, cabins, kitchens, bathrooms, sun decks, etc., the term motor yacht is used.
Motor boats and CE classification
Motor boats and motor yachts can be used in both inland lakes and coastal waters. However, most motor yachts suitable for high sea journeys, such as crossing seas and oceans, are typically constructed with a length of 30 meters or more, making them exclusive to the super and megayacht sector. Depending on the country, motorboats may require a driving license depending on their engine size or power at the propeller shaft. Additionally, some European inland lakes restrict the usage of motorboats to those with electric propulsion during certain times of the year or year-round.
Types of motor boats
There are several common types of motor boats: sport boats, runabouts, day cruisers, cabin boats (center cabin, front cabin, half cabin), racing boats, houseboats or tucker boats. Generally, outboard and inboard engines are used for power, although only inboard engines are used exclusively for motor yachts. Displacer boats and gliders are two other exceptions. However, there is no international standard for motor boats, as designs and types vary greatly from country to country.
Hull shapes of motor boats
At the market, you’ll find a wide selection of hull shapes, with the most frequent being the Deep V-hull, perfect for cutting through the waves. The Flat hull or flat bottom hull, ideal for lakes and rivers, the Semi-V hull, with its deep V shape in the bow and flat aft, the Pontoon hull, based on the catamaran principle and the Round-bottom hull suitable for long-distance boats and yachts.
Engines of motor boats
Different types of engines that can be used in motor boats are outboard (internal combustion engine using gasoline or electric), inboard (internal combustion engine using either gasoline or diesel and electric) and Z-drive (a combination of outboard and inboard), jet propulsion (a propeller surrounded by a sleeve-shaped housing), pod drive (an inboard engine with a propulsion unit attached underneath the hull), and forward-drive (a Z-drive where the propeller is pointing forward).
Which are the best-known boat manufacturers?
Some of the best-known boat manufacturers worldwide that produce boats up to 10 meters in length include US companies like Boston Whaler, Sea Ray, Yamaha, Bayliner, and European like Parker, 3D Tender, Boesch, Buster, Öchsner or Yamarin. These manufacturers are well-known for their quality and innovation in the boating industry.
